Think the catwalks are all about the clothes? Think again! This season, designers have paid homage to the humble accessory, and from bangles to sunglasses, shoes and scarves, those finishing touches are in the spotlight. Here’s our guide to everything you need to know about upgrading your accessories for summer:
Sunglasses. As soon as you’ve popped on your sunnies it means summer is officially here –yay! – and for the sunny season this year a pair of shades is even more of a fashion necessity. Fifties-throwback cat-eye sunglasses are having a moment; if you’re feeling brave opt for a quirky pair with multicolours or neons. After something a little subtler? Tortoiseshell and black will never date.
For something extra funky, note the flurry of avant-garde shades featuring polkadots, heart shapes and geometric prints – uber cool! Clash colours with your clothes or get arty with some nail varnish pens for an individual take on the look.
Bangles. A pile of multi bracelets and bangles stacked high up the arm always gets a big fashion ‘yes!’, and this season bangles have gone supersized as designers pack away delicate designs in favour of statement, chunky numbers.
Clacking beauties on the wrist have never been so au fait and this year it’s all about bold prints, statement shapes and bling-tastic embellishments. And anything goes, as long as it’s b-i-g – one statement bangle works just as well as a mix’n’match stack.
Keep your wristwear in line with the summer’s hottest trends by looking for African-inspired pieces – from Donna Karan to Carolina Herrera and Hermes, colours were kept earthy and wood was a big hit.
Watches. Watches adorned the most stylish of wrists at the summer shows. The look is decidedly pared-back, with a hint of the masculine. Straps were leather and watch faces traditional and classic. Statements in the form of jewels, colour and embellishment were cast aside in favour of stacked watches at Vivienne Westwood and cut out straps at Julien Macdonald.
Scarves. Scarf prints were big news all over the runways for s/s, adorning shirts, skirts, trousers and dresses at D&G’s bow-out show. But the original and best way to wear it for summer is still on the neck.
Silk scarves were belted, twisted and tied on heads, necks and around waists at Marc Jacobs, Rochas and Vivienne Westwood.
Carolina Herrera tied printed green numbers around models’ necks whilst Emilio Pucci took the trend down low, adoring waists with belted scarves featuring prints and buttons. Over at Rochas ma’am was the buzzword as models bedecked in Queen Lizzie-esque headscarves and retro-cool cats-eyes sunnies sashayed the catwalks.
Wear it your way this season and wear it with attitude!
