A Guide to Getting Married in Edinburgh, Scotland

What could be more romantic than getting married in the stunning city of Edinburgh, Scotland? With its ancient castle, beautiful gardens, listed buildings and so many lovely places throughout the city, Edinburgh is a great place to hold your wedding.

There are many beautiful places in the city in which you could celebrate your big day and one of the best reasons to choose Edinburgh, or anywhere in Scotland, for your wedding is that weddings can be performed anywhere at all. From stunning natural outdoor settings to more traditional indoor settings there is somewhere to suit every couple’s needs in Scotland.

The most opulent and romantic (not to mention expensive!) venue in Edinburgh would be Edinburgh Castle- a traditional 16th Century construction which sits imposingly raised above the city on an extinct volcano. If you are in search of a venue which will add to the sense of occasion of your big day then this is certainly it.

Less dramatic venues which still contain bucketfuls of charm and character can be found easily within the city. St. Giles Cathedral (also called the High Kirk of Edinburgh), a Gothic building dating back to the 15th Century has stained glass windows, a spectacular spire and so much history built into its structure that it would make a spectacular venue for your wedding.

Another excellent wedding venue would be the stunning setting of The Dome. Situated on prestigious George Street at the heart of the city this 19th Century building has striking columns, beautiful architecture and an intricately decorated dome at the centre of the building. It offers private rooms and areas in which to hold your wedding ceremony or simply the evening reception afterward.

If you’re getting married in Edinburgh then it would be fitting to include some Scottish wedding traditions into your day whether you’re Scottish or not. A great and very simple one is the wedding scramble- where the bride’s father throws a handful of coins out for the children after the wedding ceremony as the bride is getting into her car. An easy way to keep any children present entertained searching for all the coins!

Some Scottish wedding favours could also be included if you chose to have your wedding in Scotland’s capital. Tartan ribbon and table decorations would be a perfect touch and traditional Scottish confectionary such as tablet could be given to guests as small wedding gifts. If you or any of your guests need to hire a rental car whilst in Edinburgh, search here.

If you wanted to be really Scottish you could have the groom wearing a lovely tartan kilt, as is traditional in Scotland. These come in all different colours and represent different clans or traditional Scottish families but these days you can have a more modern plain black kilt which looks great and incorporates tradition with a more modern twist.

Each and every couple wants different things from their wedding day and there are so many beautiful locations in Edinburgh that to pick just one would be a seriously tough business. Whatever you are looking for from your wedding venue, Edinburgh is sure to have it in abundance.
